It Almost Killed My Newsletter
Everyone told me the same thing:
“Write what you love, and the readers will follow.”
Sounds poetic. But it’s a setup.
I ran with that advice. Wrote my heart out. Deep dives. Personal essays. Threads that took hours.
Crickets.
Who really owns your audience?
Being a Creator has never been easy, but unpredictable algorithms make connecting with your audience on social media harder than ever.
Enter beehiiv, the newsletter platform used to send this very email.
beehiiv frees you from the algorithms, giving you the tools to connect and create a more direct relationship with your followers.
Plus, with a network of premium advertisers and paid subscription options, you can tap into new revenue streams from day one.
No response. No traction. Just effort.
And the worst part?
I blamed myself. Thought I lacked skill.
But the real problem wasn’t quality. It was direction.
So I switched approaches. I stopped writing for me.
And started writing for them.
Guess what changed? đź§
🧲 Passion Isn’t A Growth Plan
That “write what you love” advice?
It’s everywhere. But it doesn’t help much.
It’s introspective. Good for journaling. Not for building anything outside yourself.
I was writing about things I cared about.
But I never stopped to ask what they cared about.
So I listened.
I read DMs. Tweets. Comments. Reddit posts.
Real frustration. Real questions. Real people.
When I started focusing on others instead of myself, everything shifted.
People reached out. Readers stayed longer. Feedback became real.
You’ve heard the hype. It’s time for results.
For all the buzz around agentic AI, most companies still aren't seeing results. But that's about to change. See real agentic workflows in action, hear success stories from our beta testers, and learn how to align your IT and business teams.
🛠️ The Fix: Use This Prompt Before You Write
Ask ChatGPT:
“What’s the most frustrating thing newsletter creators battle with when trying to grow?”
That question is the beginning.
Then build something around it.
Write a short story. Share something simple that worked. Make it so clear it sticks.
Still stuck? Try these prompts too:
“What’s a common mistake people make in their first 90 days of running a newsletter?”
“List 3 growth strategies most creators overlook in 2024.”
“Break down how someone can grow their reader base using Reddit or TikTok.”
“Create 3 fresh content hooks that don’t sound pushy or fake.”
“What do newsletter writers usually see wrong about what their readers care about?”
Five of those can lead to something worth writing.
And every single one is focused on real people, not your personal monologue.
Still unsure how to prompt well?
🔍 Ask This Before You Hit Send
“Does this help someone or just sound clever?”
That question helped me find my groove again.
It’s what shifted my writing from self-centered to reader-focused.
People don’t care about your mindset tip, morning routine, or favorite book.
Unless it connects to what they’re working through right away.
So here’s what I do:
I read my draft as if I’ve never seen my own surname before.
If I’d scroll past it, it’s not ready.
Still not sure this works?
Ask yourself:
Are you writing to sound interesting, or to make someone feel seen?
