📩 Escape the Inbox Blur

Keeping Readers Hooked in the Age of Email Fatigue

I found a post by Tyler Morin, the mind behind The Water Coolest and Leverage Letter. Tyler started The Water Coolest from scratch, sold it to Barstool Sports, later bought it back, and turned those lessons into a clear playbook for creators. Tyler speaks about voice, scale, and staying original when every inbox looks alike.

Why This Post Matters

Readers have many choices. They skim, they bail, and they forget. A steady voice that feels human can cut through the noise. Tyler learned this while working with large audiences at Barstool and while writing his own daily notes. His point is simple. Be yourself, build a system that protects that voice, and make bigger plans than you think you can handle.

Seven Lessons You Can Use

  1. Be yourself. “At Barstool, everyone is exactly who they are on camera, and that is their edge,” Tyler said. Real voice builds trust. If your writing sounds like a copy of a copy, readers drift.

  2. Think bigger. A note Tyler heard often was, “You are thinking too small. Take bigger swings.” Do work that feels a little scary. Try bold partnerships and projects across channels.

  3. Add structure to the chaos. Tyler writes each day while helping many newsletters grow. He keeps a simple voice guide with rules for tone, pacing, and humor. Jokes stay brief and tied to a clear point. Constraints help quality rise.

  4. Growth is not about going viral. First make the writing strong. Then test partner channels such as Audience Bridge, SparkLoop, or Beehiiv. Add paid channels only after readers stay active for weeks.

  5. Engagement drives delivery. Tyler tracks replies, forwards, and link taps. He even asks readers to forward and CC him. He said he would buy both friends a drink. That small gesture sparks real talk and stronger ties.

  6. AI is the helper, not the author. Tyler values a human voice. He uses tools to research, summarize, and remix drafts, but the final words sound like him.

  7. The wave is just starting. Many quit after ten issues. Those who keep going shape the next wave. Consistency compounds.

How To Put This Into Practice

Start with a one page voice guide. List three words that describe your tone. Set simple rules for sentence length, humor, and pacing. Note words you never use. Share the guide with anyone who helps you. Plan bigger moves. Write down five creators or brands you admire. Reach out for a swap, a guest note, or a joint project. Build a light growth stack. Publish strong organic work, test one partner channel, then add a paid source if readers keep engaging. Create one sharing habit. End each send by asking readers to reply with a one line thought, or to forward the note to a friend who might enjoy it, and CC you so you can thank both people. Run a weekly review. Read the most thoughtful replies, log two ideas you will try next week, and send two quick thank you notes. Use AI as a helper. Give it the research, the summary, and the remix, then add your own voice on top.
