What the Promotions tab is
Gmailās tabs help people triage mail. Promotions is where marketing, deals, and bulk-style messages get routed. Newsletters often look like those, so they get swept in too.
Why your newsletter ends up there
Gmail uses patterns and history to decide category. The big levers:
Sender reputation - Weak domain reputation raises the chance of Promotions or worse, Spam. Check yours in Google Postmaster Tools and watch the āSpam Rateā and āDomain Reputationā charts.
User behavior - Low opens, fast deletes, no replies. Gmail reads that as ānot important.ā
Content fingerprints - Salesy trigger words, coupon vibes, click-baity subject lines.
Formatting footprint - Image-heavy layouts, lots of links, bulky HTML, many trackers.
None of these alone is a guarantee. Together, they nudge Gmailās decision.
How to improve your odds
Think plain, personal, and consistent.
Use a human sender - A real name and a real address, not no-reply. Example: [email protected].
Lighten the template - Fewer images, fewer buttons, cleaner HTML. A plain-text or hybrid style often behaves better.
Trim the links - One primary call to action is usually enough. Add the rest on your site.
Invite replies - Ask a simple question near the top and mean it. Real back-and-forth is a strong positive signal.
Ship on a schedule - Consistency helps reputation. Tuesday morning, twice a month, whatever you can keep.
Prune cold subscribers - Sunset people who havenāt opened in a while. Your list quality, not just size, matters.
Warm new domains - Ramp send volume instead of blasting day one.
Basics check - Make sure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are configured correctly. They donāt force Primary, but they support the reputation that does.

Ask readers to move you to Primary
Gmail remembers this preference.
Open Gmail and go to Promotions.
Find your email.
Drag it to Primary.
When Gmail asks about future emails from this sender, click Yes.
You can paste a short note in your next send:
If you want to keep these in your Primary inbox, drag this email from Promotions to Primary and hit Yes when Gmail asks.
Thatās it. Not foolproof, but it helps.
If youāve fought the Promotions tab and found tactics that worked, reply and tell me what moved the needle. Iāll try them and share the results.
Cheers to staying out of the promo pile.
